A 'demitasse' (originally French word) is a small cup used to serve Turkish coffee. It typically has about 60-90 ml (2-3 fl oz) capacity-half the size of a full coffee cup. They are typically made of ceramic (pottery-porcelain or stoneware) and accompanied by matching saucers (type of small dishware). A 'demitasse' spoon is a diminutive spoon smaller than a teaspoon. It is traditionally used for coffee drinks in specialty cups and for spooning Cappuccino froth. First appearing in the Ottoman Empire, under the strictest interpretations of the Quran, the strong coffee was considered a drug and its consumption was forbidden. Due to immense popularity of the beverage, the Sultan eventually lifted this prohibition.

Turkish coffee is prepared using very finely ground unfiltered beans. Any coffee bean may be used and arabica varieties are considered best, but robusta or a blend is also used. Turkish coffee is served in a special pot called cezve and often called ibrik elsewhere.
