Jane Eyre was the first novel by Charlotte Bronte, who published the work under the pseudonym Currer Bell, pretending to be a male writer. Many features of the society of those times were criticized in the work, but still it became a popular novel, setting the course for the fruitful career of the renowned author.

The greatest ambition of Charlotte Bronte was to be a writer. From a very young age, she and her brother Branwell collaborated in writing poetry and stories set in their imaginary world of Angria. They were prolific in their efforts. Charlotte claimed later that she had written more before the age of 13 than afterwards.
