What is a Queen Consort?

When a woman earns the title of queen by marrying a king, she is called a queen consort. Usually a queen consort has no official political power and can't hold throne after her husband's death. Anyway, she can act as a regent of the kingdom until her children are old enough to rule the country. When a man marries a queen, he is respectively called a king consort. The title is given to a queen consort as a courtesy, showing her importance in the life of the monarch. The people of the kingdom are to treat her with the same respect as the king.

That's correct! Queen Victoria was Queen regnant (I.e. Queen in her own right) so when Albert married her he was not King, but was granted status as Prince Consort, later. Same with Prince Philip; two steps behind as consort, he's not the king. Queen Margrethe II of Denmark is a similar situation, her late husband was Prince Henrik, as consort. Here Endeth the lesson!:)
