What is an early sign of autism in babies six months to one year old?
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability caused by differences in the brain. People with ASD often have problems with social communication and interaction, and restricted or repetitive behaviors or interests. People with ASD may also have different ways of learning, moving, or paying attention. It is important to note that some people without ASD might also have some of these symptoms. But for people with ASD, these characteristics can make life very challenging.
Some signs includes:
*Reacting in an unexpected way to new faces
*Rarely smiling in social situations
*Making little or no eye contact
*Difficulty in following objects with their eyes
*Hearing their name does not produce a response
*Having limited or no reaction to loud sounds, or not turning their head to locate sounds
*Overreacting to some sounds

some of those could be because they can not hear sounds. My son had a lot of those symptoms, which turned out that he was hard of hearing. He had to have tubes put in his ears and all was remedied. Not a big deal, it just put a permanent hole, like a ear piercing, in the tubes in his ears that do not drain correctly. Not doing it causes fluid in the ears so everything is muffled and ear infections.

jonbroberts, Another thing that seems to assist with the brain development is long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids. The US diet, and other western nations, has very little LCPs. For most of us, that isn't a problem as we can convert short chain to long chain. It seems that for some with ASD, ADD, ADHD, dyspraxia, apraxia, and dyslexia, they are unable to convert short chain to long chain. Supplementation with fish oils and flax seed oils have helped many. There is a book by Dr J. Stordy on this form of supplementation - The LCP Solution. A friend's son with ADD and dyslexia was put on Ritalin and he ended up self-harming and threatening family members. I suggested to my friend that she read the book. She started her son on supplements. Suffice to say he was able to ditch Ritalin and is now an extremely happy and capable adult, with healthy relationships, and running his own company.

jonbroberts, this is an interesting topic, so I've just done a bit of quick research, perhaps well summed up in this quote from Autism Parenting Magazine
"safe administration of suramin requires accurate dosage, monitoring of toxicity and a trained professional. Parents are advised to consult with their medical doctors before considering any kind of medical treatments for their autistic little ones."
I wonder whether you have a vested interest?
Rather than blame "big pharma", perhaps blame your counties legal system and ensuing the litany of law suits they face!

I have an autistic sister and I may have Asperger's myself. These symptoms are not always there , especially for higher function people.

jonbroberts, Please let us know how long the treatment lasts and what the family does with the gains their child has. He will need re-treatment, based on available information regarding this drug.
