An irrational number can't be represented as a/b (if a and b are integers). The square-root of 2 is the most popular example of an irrational number and it conforms to this condition. Apparently Hippasus of Metapontum discovered the irrational numbers identifying the sides of the pentagram. This way the ancient Greeks are considered to be the first ones to know the irrational numbers.
