Vibrissae is a medical term, referring to the thick hairs growing inside humans' nostrils. It is also another name for animals' whiskers.

Whiskers are hair typical for mammals. They are characterized by big size, large hair follicle and tactile sensing. They also have identifiable representation on the somatosensory cortex of the brain. Most mammals including primates have whiskers, but humans are the exception.
