In the First Book of Samuel in the Old Testament, the Witch of Endor was consulted by Saul to summon the spirit of the dead prophet Samuel. Saul wished to receive advice on defeating the Philistines in an impending battle, after prior attempts to consult God failed, because God abandoned Saul because the latter kept disobeying Samuel, God's human conduit. When summoned, however, the spirit of Samuel only delivered a prophecy of doom against Saul, who committed suicide after the Philistines invaded his kingdom the next day and felled over half his forces.

The episode is depicted in a painting by Salvator Rosa (1615-1673) which is owned by the Louvre in Paris. Saul is the kneeling man in armor, below the Witch of Endor, while the none-too-spectral robed old man is the ghost of Samuel

Apparently purely coincidental, Endor is also the forest planet in 'Return of the Jedi', the last of the opening three movies of the 'Star Wars' franchise. Endor is the home of Ewoks, a species of stubby and furry monkey-teddy bear-like humanoids who became unlikely allies of Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo and the rebellion against Darth Vader and the Dark Empire.
