What is celebrated on April 22 of every year?

It's your government acting on your behalf, making sure industry and big business doesn't run roughshod over our natural resources. How would you like a chemical dump in your backyard or by the school where your kids go to study? How would you like lead in your paint or noxious fumes spewing from plants by your home. Check out the air polution figures from the 60s and 70s in LA compared to today. There is definitely much cleaner air there today thanks to emissions standards having been implemented.

This sounded like a big deal when I was in high school. I thought my parents were finally starting to pay attention to the whole earth and the effects of pollution. 46 years later some things have changed, many have not!!! Or not enough. The poles are melting, oceans are warming, and the world is still polluting.

Tell me why. Don't you like clean air and water?

The EPA was created by Congress. The Environmental Protection Act was passed by Congress (our elected officials) and signed by President Nixon. The EPA does not make laws. It enforces laws passed by Congress.

I was part of the inaugural Earth Day. We cleaned up a creek near my high school and piled the bags up in a field north of the high school. Barack Obama spoke at my high school from that same field.
