What is dry ice?

Dry ice is the solid form of carbon dioxide (CO2), comprising two oxygen atoms bonded to a single carbon atom. It is colorless, with a sour zesty odor, non-flammable, and slightly acidic.

Dry ice is frequently used for food preservation in non-cyclic refrigerators and in packing biological samples or other things which are to remain in cold. It is also used in ice-cream production and sometimes in medicine (for example in warts removal).

The author neglected to mention one of the advantages of dry ice. It doesn’t “melt” leaving a liquid, it goe straight from solid to gas. No mess!

Should have mentioned that dry ice is -109 degrees Fahrenheit. And should not be handled without proper gloves.

In one of his novels, John Dickson Carr (aka Carter Dickson) made a huge bloooper depicting a "closed room mystery". The guy is cunningly murdered by putting a box of dry ice under his bed. The next day, the victim appears dead, and of course the box with the poisonous gas is empty. Unfortunately, Mr Carr mistook innocuous CO2 for carbon monoxide, CO, the very poisonous gas often used in "garage murders" where the victim is locked with a running car and the exhaust pipe connected to the cabin..
