From Webster - epiphytology. 1 : a science that deals with character, ecology, and causes of outbreak of plant diseases especially of epiphytotic nature. 2 : the sum of the factors controlling the presence or absence of a disease or pathogen of plants aspects of epiphytology and control of tomato fruit rot.

drjkmiller, I agree, and that was my first reaction to the question, epiphytes + logos. But when my answer was not to be found among the choices I remembered the Webster dictionary mentioned other meanings (Yes, I still read dictionaries)

Peter Korpics Jr., I agree that that would have been interesting. However, the author would have had to use more than one source. The current reference is a dictionary entry that has only the definition and several example sentences. Thank you, Christine, James's wife

I guessed parasitic plants, too. So, we learned today, and last year, that plant pathology is epiphytology. Have a great day! Christine, James's wife
