Invented in Germany, a Diesel Shandy is a mix of lager and cola. More specifically, it is usually made with the the Radler brand of lager. In the Germany city of Cologne, a mix of cola and Kolsch lager is called 'Drecksack', which means 'dirtbag'.

The drink derives from an older drink known as ‘shandygaff’, a mix of ale with ginger beer. The earliest mention comes from 'The Bell's New Weekly Messenger' in April 1842.

In 1870, it became popular to mix lager and lemonade, a drink that in Britain is still known as a 'shandy'. By the 1960s lager and lime or lemonade were drunk more frequently than the shandygaff, which has become a thing of the past.
