The Scots Dumpy is a very old poultry breed of purely Scottish extraction. In the early 20th century it was known by many different names - Bakie, Corlaigh, Crawler, Creeper and Stumpy. It is a hardy breed, although susceptible to external parasites such as fleas or mite, so needs to be checked regularly. The Scots Dumpy is one of two Scottish breeds of chicken, the other being the Scots Grey.

The Scots Dumpy almost disappeared in the middle of the last century when the breed went into severe decline. Had it not been for a dedicated band of breeders in Scotland during the 1970s it could have died out completely. They imported a dozen birds from Kenya, descendants of a small flock taken there in 1902 in the dowry of Violet Mabel Carnegie, and these birds were used to re-constitute the breed.

In appearance the Scots Dumpy generally has legs not more than one and a half inches long, hence the bird waddles from side to side. The bird has a broad flat body, single comb, red eyes and earlobes.

There are both large and bantam (smaller) varieties, with the main colours being black and cuckoo, although blues and whites are sometimes seen. There are more large Dumpies than bantams and the number of cuckoo bantams is very low.

Scots Dumpy hens lay about 180 white or cream-coloured eggs per year. They are good sitters, and are sometimes used to hatch clutches of game-bird eggs.
