What is sushi traditionally wrapped in?
Sushi is a Japanese food consisting of cooked vinegared rice combined with other ingredients, seafood, vegetables and sometimes tropical fruits. Ingredients and forms of sushi presentation vary widely, but the ingredient which all sushi have in common is rice. Sushi refers to the seasoned rice that is traditionally wrapped in seaweed. In the non-vegan world, they are traditionally served with raw fish.

g sanborn, Technically speaking, sushi is not sushi unless it has rice - you are probably thinking of sashimi - a simple preparation of sliced fish, served without rice or other ingredients.

Sashimi is the original and only true sushi dish from Japan. The rest are not. So the answer to this question is rice!!!

Common sushi is fish and vegetables wrapped in sticky rice, wrapped in seaweed. So both rice and seaweed are correct.

Maki is "the seasoned rice that is traditionally wrapped in seaweed", NOT "sushi".

Only Maki are wrapped in seaweed, the other forms (like sashimi) are not, but all are "wrapped" or served on rice. Incorrect question and answer by someone ill-informed.

Erroneously people refer to sushi as raw fish. Au contrer mon frer (obviously I don't write in french) sashimi is raw fish spiced or seasoned but raw. You are welcome very much. Not that there isn't raw fish in sushi. There is, but the fame is the rice. Yay me.

Mark Souza, Please define “traditional.” The sushi rolls that are so popular in America can’t be found in Japan at all, so no, sushi is not wrapped in rice!

Yvonna Florescu, Sashimi is NOT sushi! Sushi is RICE, not raw fish, and there are many kinds of sushi that contain no fish at all.

This one is incorrect. Traditional sushi is wrapped in rice. A later form incorporated a wrapping of nori (seaweed).
