What is the "Cold Sunday" known for?

"Cold Sunday" was a meteorological event which took place on January 17, 1982, when unprecedentedly cold air swept down from Canada and plunged temperatures across much of the United States far below existing all-time record lows. The temperature hit 25 below zero at the National Weather Service (NWS) near Negaunee. It also hit 25 below in my hometown of Milwaukee. These record-low temperatures were at the high end of the western Great Lakes temperature spectrum. Iron Mountain registered 31 below and Ironwood crashed to 41 below zero—an all-time record low at that location.

I guessed. Lucky hit. I was stationed at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey. I'm pretty sure we didn't notice it out there.

OK, I didn't get that one: thought maybe it was when the power went off. But I also recall it was not nearly as cold then as about six or so years earlier. I was in Pittsburgh PA during the winter of 1976 or 1977, and it got so cold (-29 F) for over a month that the three rivers at the Point were all frozen solid. There have been cold snaps since then, but never for quite so long!
