What is the distance between the Russian Federation and the USA at their closest point?

We bet some of you have always thought that the distance between the two countries is really great. Actually, it is about 2.5 miles at their closest point, that is between Cape Dezhnev and Alaska.

The two countries are separated by the Bering Strait, and the separating point is about 53 miles (85 kilometers) wide. But the distance between Little Diomede Island, belonging to the US, and Big Diomede Island, belonging to Russia, is only 2.5 miles (4 kilometers). That's what makes the Russian Federation and the United States such close neighbors.
