The Heimlich maneuver or abdominal thrusts is an emergency response technique to treat upper airway obstructions (or choking) by the foreign material. This method was first described by Dr. Henry Heimlich (an American thoracic surgeon) in 1974. Now he is widely credited as the inventor of the procedure.

Knowing how to do the Heimlich maneuver properly can save someone's life. If you find yourself near someone who needs help, it is very important to determine if the person is truly choking. Common symptoms are: he or she is noisy breathing, unable to speak and cough effectively, his or her lips turned blue or gray. Get the person in a standing position and follow these simple steps:

  • From behind, wrap your arms around the victim's waist.
  • Make a fist and place the thumb side of your fist against the victim's upper abdomen, below the ribcage and above the navel.
  • Grasp your fist with your other hand and press into their upper abdomen with a quick upward thrust. Do not squeeze the ribcage; confine the force of the thrust to your hands.
  • Repeat until object is expelled.
