In human anatomy, the clavicle or collarbone is a long bone that serves as a brace between the shoulder-blade and the sternum or breastbone. The shoulder girdle consists of the clavicle and the shoulder blade. The clavicle belongs to the long bones group and is the only one of them to lie horizontally. It is also a palpable bone, but the visibility of the place of the bone depends on the amount of fat one has in its region. If the bone is visible, it usually composes a bulge in the skin.

When one's shoulder is abducted, the collarbone rotates along its axis, just like a key, and that's where its name the clavicle comes from: clavicula means "little key" in Latin.
