Uranium is atomic number 92 on the periodic table. In its most common isotope, it has an atomic mass of 238 AMU. Uranium is the heaviest and most dense naturally occurring element. Atomic numbers above 92 are the trans-uranium elements and they have only been developed and isolated by humankind since the dawn of the Atomic Age. Uranium is so heavy and dense that it is used in anti-tank and armor penetrating shells in the militaries of the Nuclear Powers. These weapons are tipped with depleted Uranium that has been used to make nuclear material for weapons. This form of Uranium - mostly U 238 - is not fissionable and can not be used to start a nuclear train reaction in a weapon. The Uranium is extremely dense however and can penetrate many types of steel battle armor. Plutonium is denser, but it is not a natural occurring element and its atomic number is 94.
