What is the motto of the USA?
"In God We Trust" (also rendered as "In God we trust") is the official motto of the United States as well as the motto of the U.S. state of Florida. It was adopted by the U.S. Congress in 1956, replacing E pluribus unum ("Out of many, one"), which had been the de facto motto since the initial design of the Great Seal of the United States.
While the earliest mentions of the phrase can be found in the mid-19th century, the origins of this phrase as a political motto lie in the American Civil War, where Union supporters wanted to emphasize their attachment to God and to boost morale.

A little strange that this is the motto, as the founders insisted on separation of church and state.
I would prefer E pluribus unum as the motto.

I wholeheartedly agree, Howard Groopman. The original pilgrims left England for North America to escape religious persecution. That is why the founding fathers stressed separation of church and state. I find it both baffling and insulting that we Americans are no longer using E pluribus unum. "Out of Many, One". And that is what we are. A nation comprised of people from many countries. Many cultures. The big mixing pot. Religion was nothing to do with it.
