Kwanzaa is a week-long holiday honoring African culture and traditions. It falls between December 26 and January 1 each year. Maulana Karenga, an African-American leader, proposed this observance and it was first celebrated between December 1966 and January 1967. It is celebrated by people from a range of African countries and their descendants. Kwanzaa consists of a week of celebrations, which ends with a feast and the exchange of gifts.

This is a fairly new holiday, but I think it adds to the segregation rather than intergradation in society - WE ARE ALL ONE RACE, best we act like one.

Recognizing one's heritage and background helps to identify who they are, which should have nothing to do with one relating to others in their society. I feel I am a better person from knowing who I am and from whence I came. It also helps me to get along better with my fellow man when we bring to our relationships our culture differences, particularly when we learn to respect each other for our differences.

This is a new holiday however African Americans have been stripped from their ethnicity and ancestry. This holiday gives a sense of self awareness and worth. Also this holiday educates the non believers

AnnaLee Sellars, actually, the Jewish holiday of "Chanukah" gets the holiday season started followed by "Christmas" which is followed by "Kwanzaa" in that order during the holiday season.

Denis Wittman, the holiday of "Kawanzaa" has been around since 1966. I wouldn't consider that to be relatively young in it's existence.

Does this mean the Irish-Americans can't or shouldn't celebrate St. Patrick's Day? Which clearly is a cultural/religious holiday. It had become very commercial, McDonalds sells green shakes. I'm not Irish but.....why can't people go to a public Kwanzaa celebration and see what it's all about? I've been to Hanukkah celebrations, Polish Festivals, Mexican restaurants, Chinese New Year celebrations....come on people there is nothing racist about Kwanzaa or any of the things I mentioned above.

Stop it, the fourth of July is celebrated all over America, but get real that is a white holiday, because let's face it, its a celebration of White's victory over the British. However blacks were still in chains as slaves.
