Founded in 1954, journalist Fred Meyers, plus Helen Jones, Larry Andrews, Marcia Glaser and Oliver M. Vans formed a non-profit organization called the Human Society of the United States (HSUS). Its focus is on animal welfare and opposition to animal-related cruelties on a national scale. HSUS is a member of the global network through an affiliation with the Human Society International (founded in 1991) listing staff in 17 nations as of 2013.

The current location of the HSUS headquarters is in Washington, D.C. the nation’s capitol.

Various methodologies are used to reach the American public with their mission including, public education, science-based analysis, training, litigation, public policy and direct care. As of 2014, there are 528 employees with a compliment of 1,520 volunteers advancing the strategies of the organization. HSUS works on issues including companion animals, wildlife, farm animals, horses, and other equines, plus animals used in research, testing and education.

Other goals of the HSUS is to reduce the homelessness of the dog and cat population and to regulate pet shops to end the commercial pet breeding trade.

As of today, HSUS operates 5 animal sanctuaries in the states of California, Florida, Massachusetts, Oregon and Texas. Other shelters are operated by state branches of HUSUS.

During 2013, HSUS’s assistance and support resulted in 109 animal protection laws in various states.
