Modern scientists consider Lucy to be the biggest diamond in the universe. Lucy is a star consisting of diamonds! It's a crystallized white dwarf. Its technical name is BPM 37093, and the name Lucy was given to the star after the song Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds by the Beatles. Can you imagine a diamond 4000 km across?! That's Lucy! Its estimated carat weight is 10 billion trillion trillion carat. It used to be a bright star, but then the star faded, and now Lucy is just the compressed core of it. Lucy belongs to the constellation Centaurus and is located in 50 light-years from our planet.

If you asked the largest diamond in the universe, Lucy would be correct. The Cullinan is the largest diamond in the world since its discovery in 1905.

Too clever by half. Lucy as “a diamond” remains speculation since no one has ever been there to bring back a sample to verify the claim. Lucy is a dead white dwarf the surface of which has crystallized and therefore “IS POSSIBLY the largest natural diamond anyone has ever seen.” Only Natural Diamonds, 6/12/2020. (emphasis supplied). That scientific possibility does not equal certainty. It may well be a sound theory but until a rover goes and returns to earth with a sample of the crystallization, the Cullinan remains the largest diamond in the universe.
