What is the name of this domestic duck?
The Emerald Duck, previously known as the Labrador Duck, is a breed of domestic duck.
Originating from the American continent, the Emerald Duck is a melanistic and slightly smaller form of the mallard. It was imported to England in the 19th century and quickly spread throughout Europe.
The incubation period for the eggs is 28 days. During this time, the female leaves her nest for only about 30 minutes a day to fulfill essential needs like eating, drinking, and defecating. Ducklings can take up to 24 hours to break out of their shells. They follow their mother closely as she provides the body heat they cannot yet maintain on their own. The father does not typically participate in raising the ducklings, although in temperate regions, some males have been observed helping to keep the ducklings warm at night.
