What is the official language of Austria?
The official language of Austria is German. The accent is different from the German spoken in Germany, although quite a few Austrian dialects are similar to local dialects spoken in Southern Germany. Some words also differ, but only a few. Anyway, linguists differentiate between the two variants of German and study their distinctive peculiarities.

So were Ernst Mach, Christian Doppler, Erwin Schrödinger, Richard Kuhn, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Senta Berger, Klaus Maria Brandauer, Hedy Lamarr, Romy Schneider, Maximilian Schell, Christoph Waltz, Joseph Haydn, Gustav Mahler, Johann Strauss II, Mozart, Franz Schubert, Ferdinand Porsche, Daniel Swarovski, Erich von Stroheim, Fritz Lang, Otto Preminger, Josef von Sternberg, Billy Wilder, Fred Zinnemann, the Rothschilds, Maximilian I - Emperor of Mexico, Hans Asperger, Sigmund Freud, Gregor Mendel, Oskar Schindler, and Simon Wiesenthal. So what's your point, or were you just trying to bring the conversation down as usual?

Americans should never, ever play the race card unless they are a North American Indian. ALL the rest of us are squatters!!!

Speaking of Hitler being Austrian and all... We Americans would all be in a bad way if we were judged by our very worst...Vermin the likes of Rick Shomin, or Senate Repukes who green light terrorist scum to buy guns without a background check.
William Laughlin
Although there have been claims that Hitler was Jewish, it is untrue. A Jew is any person whose mother was a Jew or any person who has gone through the formal process of conversion to Judaism. Neither Hitler nor his mother meet those requirements.

That fact that a question may be difficult for you to answer doesn't necessarily make it a "trick question".
William Laughlin
Not really. I think it is rather straight forward. It's like asking what the official language of Brazil is! What's tricky about that?

What a load of bigoted comments

Bewley Steve No, I don't think that was his implication. You are reading far too much into his sophomoric response and giving him far too much credit. Have you ever read any of his other comments? I'm fairly certain he said that just to be a burr under the saddle.

Rick Shomin Well there we have it. An endorsement from Rick Shomin, so it MUST be true! LOL

Irene A, exactly but your wasting your time I've finally got rougher about it. I get on here to enjoy it then all the mean remarks? If I did have other good people on here I'd just stop. I do it for fun and I'm 69 so I do it to keep the brain working..I had a stroke too about 10 years ago so it helps to keep the mind active..
Welcome

I am amused over all the discussion over the language used in Austria. It doesn't seem to be any different than the English language and all the variations it undergoes in various locations including countries that have different names.
English may have started in England, but it, with many variations, is the same language used in the United States (and further, in New England, the South, the Midwest, the West, etc.), Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and many other areas around thw globe.
So what if the German used in Austria (or any other place) is somewhat different than that used in the motherland?

carlthedad, the Netherlands (no longer called Holland) speaks Dutch, not German, though similar. A small are in the east of Belgium is German-speaking.

Germans call their country Deutschland and their language is Deutsch. Deutschland and Deutsch translate into Germany and German respectively. Austrians speak German. Research for yourself.

"Austrian" not a language that I know of, yet 17% seem to think it is.
