Qatar is an independent country located in Western Asia. It occupies the small Qatar Peninsula on the northeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula. The only land border is with Saudi Arabia to the south. The Persian Gulf borders Qatar on the other sides.

Qatar's flag is the only national flag having a width more than twice its height. The flag is referred to as ‘Al Addam’ which translates as "to the people". The flag is in the ratio of 11:28. It was adopted shortly before the country's declaration of independence from Britain on 3 September 1971.

Qatar’s historic flag was plain red under the British protectorate. Because of the sun, the colour went darker. Qatar adopted this maroon-purple colouring which symbolises the blood shed during the several wars that Qatar has undergone, particularly the Qatari–Bahraini War.

A white band on the hoist side has been added to embody peace, separated from the maroon area by 9 white triangles which act as a serrated line. The hoist is the half or edge of a flag nearest to the flagpole. The 9 points indicate Qatar as the 9th member of the Reconciled Emirates of the Gulf, after the Qatari-British treaty of 1916.

The Qatari government defined the exact shade of the Qatari flag as Pantone 1955 C, or 'Qatar maroon'. It has been asserted that Qatar was the site of the earliest known production of shellfish dye during the rule of the Kassites due to the presence of a purple dye industry on the Al Khor Islands.
