What is the only state in the United States to be composed entirely of islands?
Hawaii is the 50th and the youngest state of the US. It received statehood on August 21, 1959, almost 8 months after the admission of Alaska. It is the only U.S. state located in Oceania and the only one composed entirely of islands. Hawaii's area of 4 thousand square miles makes it the largest US island. Often called "Aloha State', Hawaii is one of the most popular American tourists destinations. Over 7 million people visit Hawaii every year.

Which by definition is an island group. So yes, it's an island. Just a series of them. I have friends in Hawaii who refer to themselves as "Islanders."

OMG, what a bunch of nitpickin’ weirdos there are on this site. The question is very simple and straightforward, it wasn’t meant to trick anyone. The state of Hawaii IS a group of islands (which is what the question asked), a group of islands IS an archipelago, hence Hawaii is an archipelago. No wonder people in this country can’t get along with each other.

I am 71 years old and never heard the word "archipelago" and I would venture to say 90% of the population has not either. You may be technically correct, how very intelligent of you. But, to the average citizen, Hawaii is a state, and we consider it an island, albiet a group of islands. I hate it when people throw their intellignence around to try and belittle others. Intelligence does not equate to wisdom.

Hawaii is not AN island - it's several islands. There is NO state in the United States that is AN island. A group of islands is called an ARCHIPELAGO - how did this question make it past scutiny? One problem today is the impreciseness of language. Reminds me of someone who recently told me the definition of "a couple of things" is two or more.

Rene Rojas You are not specific enough when you say Hawaii is not an island. Hawaii is most certainly an island, just as Oahu and Lanai are islands. I believe what you mean to say is that THE STATE OF Hawaii is not an island, but an archipelago.

The question wasn’t “which state is an island”, or which “state is an archipelago”. The question is good as it stands and I actually don’t care what you call it. I live here, on Kauai, and we call it paradise.

The Hawaiian Islands are an archipelago of eight major islands, however the island of Hawaii is indeed an island amoung the other seven,

They call themselves Islanders because they live on islands and "Archipelagers" would be rather awkward. An archipelago is NOT an island however. quiz blew this one.

Thank you for your reply because the woman he said that Hawaii is not an island was not being specific enough and her answer she was already nitpicking which is really funny

Hawaii itself IS indeed an island. The other islands make it literally an archipelago. Collectively these islands are grouped together as ONE entity known as the State of Hawaii.

Rene Rojas, it doesn’t say it is “an island.” It says, “composed entirely of islands.” Plural. Which, as you pointed out, does make it an archipelago.

Chris Lee, it says, “composed entirely of islands” which is accurate. It does not say that it is “an” island. For someone who dislikes “impreciseness of language”, your impreciseness of reading comprehension is surprising.

Chris Lee, most people don't know what an archipelago is. Remember thing are generally written for the public at a 5th grade level. And the question ask which stare in comprised/composed (not looking at question right as I write this). Of several islands. It did not say which state is AN island. 😄😄
