Hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus. It may also involve removal of the cervix, ovaries, fallopian tubes and other surrounding structures.

Usually performed by a gynaecologist, a hysterectomy may be total (removing the body, fundus, and cervix of the uterus; often called "complete") or partial (removal of the uterine body while leaving the cervix intact; also called "supracervical").

It is the second most commonly performed gynaecological surgical procedure, after cesarean section, in the United States.

Hysterectomy is a major surgical procedure that has risks and benefits and affects the hormonal balance and overall health of women. Because of this, hysterectomy is normally recommended as a last resort after pharmaceutical or other surgical options have been exhausted to remedy certain intractable and severe uterine/reproductive system conditions.

The word hyster comes from hysterical because men doctors thought women were crazy when their female organs didn't work right. Menopause is difficult for some women as is pre-mental hysteria. Lol. Thank the good Lord I never suffered badly with either.

Shirley Dutt, I have known of women committing suicide during menopause. Menopause comes early for women who have their uterus and ovaries removed. There are hormone replacement medications now to ease the symptoms. I'm not a candidate for those medications having had a bout with breast cancer so menopause lasted an entire 10 grueling years. There isn't one dam thing funny about the whole horrible thing and thankfully the people in my life understood my misery and were supportive. Shout out to all the men that can tuff it out when their wife experiences this new chapter of our life.

I had a partial hysterectomy years ago and my Obgyn left the cervix inorder to keep the abd organs up and not apt to prolapse. I was started on estrogen the day of surgery and have been on hormones ever since surgery. When everything is removed, it can be termed as a "pan" hysterectomy.

Had to have uterus, tubes, and cervix removed at 33 years old due to an abdominal pregnancy. First day of 7th month (26 weeks) daughter born at 1 lb. 14 oz., 14 inches long. They said it was a "miracle" we both survived.

Cheryl Perkins, I had a hysterectomy at age 30 when they did a bladder lift. I had already had a tubal ligation. I no longer recommend having one unless you have really bad periods. Which I did. But I know that the body still gets hormones from the actual uterus. I still have my ovaries. No oophorectomy for me. I'll be 69 in October! Never had hot flashes or hormone therapy either! Yayyy! LeeAnne Worre Risk, oophorectomy is the medical term for removal of one or both ovaries. People ask me all the time you had a complete hysterectomy? When I tell them yes then they think I had my ovaries out. Bless you, dear heart!
