What is the "&" (the and symbol) called?
An ampersand (&) is a typographical symbol which is rarely used in formal writing. It is read aloud as the word "and" and is used as a substitute for that word in informal writing and in the names of products or businesses.
In general, use of the ampersand is highly discouraged in formal writing except for a few rare instances. You are much more likely to see an ampersand used in informal writing or texting.

Hardly a trivia question, more of a spelling question.

The name derives from children learning the alphabet by rote, chanting out the letters A through Z and then adding the final symbol on the chart by saying "... and, per se [by itself], and." The chant resulted in a mondegreen when the final "and, per se, and" was heard by generations of students as "ampersand."
