This is incorrect, at least as far as the Minnesota part of the river. The Mississippi River is only about three feet wide coming out of lake Itasca, people take great fun in straddling the river bank. The mouth of the river has deliberately been widened at the lake, but no more than 40 feet at best and of course very shallow. Then it quickly narrows down to its true width.
