The flesh of a deer when used as food is called venison. Venison originally referred to the meat of any game animal but now only describes the meat of horned ungulates (hoofed animals) like deer and elk. Venison comes from the Latin word 'venari', which means 'to hunt'.

Venison may be served as steaks, sausages, minced meat and roast, and has a similar flavour to beef, although is comparabily leaner. The offal (organs) can also be eaten, but they are traditionally called 'hombres'. This is allegedly where the phrase 'humble pie' originated.

According to Jewish laws, venison is 'kosher' and may be consumed. Similarly, Muslims declare venison as 'halal', meaning 'permissable'. Yet, hunting deer is prohibited by Orthodox Judaism because deer must be slaughtered in a particular way. Muslims, on the other hand, allow deer hunting, so long as the hunter says the name of Allah when shooting the animal.
