What name was the Beatles band NEVER known by?

John Lennon was the founder of the band. But won't you be surprised to learn that originally, at the age of sixteen, he formed a skiffle group (he was the only one of the famous members present). The skiffle group was called Blackjacks but very soon young men discovered that the title was already used by another band so they changed it to Quarrymen. Other members of the legendary band joined the group gradually and got the world famous title only in 1960.

WRONG not Liverpool 4 ... In March 1957 John Lennon formed a skiffle group called The Quarrymen. Lennon met Paul McCartney on 6 July 1957; Lennon added him to the group a few days later. On 6 February 1958, George Harrison was invited to watch the group. Harrison joined the Quarrymen as lead guitarist after a rehearsal in March 1958. Lennon and McCartney both played rhythm guitar during that period. After original Quarrymen drummer Colin Hanton left the band in 1959, the band had a high turnover of drummers. Lennon's friend Stuart Sutcliffe joined on bass in January 1960. The Quarrymen went through a progression of names, including "Johnny and the Moondogs" and "Long John and The Beetles". Sutcliffe suggested the name "The Beetles" as a tribute to Buddy Holly and The Crickets. The band changed their name to "The Beatles". The band's lack of a drummer posed a serious problem, for the group's unofficial manager, Allan Williams, had arranged for them to perform in clubs on the Reeperbahn in Hamburg, West Germany.

Linda, you're correct-it was John Lennon who picked the name. He was inspired by Buddy Holly's 'Crickets', incorporaring his typically clever 'word gymnastics' by using 'Beat'les rather than 'Beet'les.

Bruce Lawrence, They were NEVER called the Liverpool 4. You might argue that Lennon's 'Blackjacks' skiffle group was not the Beatles but the other titles were used before they became the Beatles.

Charles Rosenberg, I think using the word "worship" is a bit of a stretch of "admiring" a person for their art. Although, most people probably didn't know that C&W star Waylon Jennings, was a group member of "Buddy Holly & The Crickets."

Great guess ... had to be the obvious choice. The only thing I went on was the whole Peter Best/Fifth Beatle story. So therefore it couldn't have been the Liverpool 4. Not very solid logic but it helped with a lucky guess ,
