What number does the Roman numerals in the picture represent?
M, with the line above it represents 1,000,000. LV also with lines above represent 55,000. The X at the end represent 10. Therefore, the answer is 1,055,010.
If you got the answer rightly, then you must have been an attentive student in high school. How many of you got this correct?

If you hadn't had the Roman numerals between a set of parallel lines to begin with, I might have noticed the lines above 3 of them. It would have been less confusing

I agree with all of you, the way this question was represented was very misleading!!!

Hi, Miss Brookens. Allow me to share with you this: M is 1,000. But, there is a bar atop M. A bar on top means you multiply the M (1,000) to 1,000. So, 1,000 x 1,000 is one million. I hope this helps. Thanks for reading this.

Tess Austria Nasis, for a Latin teacher you know very little about Roman numerals. A bar over the numeral multiplies that numeral by 1,000. The answer is correct.

Tess Austria Nasis, hey Latin teacher, you do know that a line over the Roman numeral means you multiply by 1,000.

I never learned about the bar. I didn't pay any attention to the bar. But, like they say you learn something every day and this is what l learned today. Thanks

I never learned about the lines over the Roman numerals. Dang! 🙄
Thank you Arab nations for giving me the use of YOUR numbers, but I learned something new!

I don’t recall learning of Roman numerals with the bad above, but grade school was a very long time ago. Adding the numerals I got 1055, which wasn’t a choice. Very confusing, and yes I read the comments about how to apply the bar.

Jaime Reynardus, a smaller value numeral before a bigger one always subtracts, but we would never place a V in front of an X (only an I would go infront of a V or an X to turn them into 4 and 9 respectively).
The reason the V can be in front of the X is because the bar above turns the V for representing 5 to being 5,000 instead.

Kath Thomson, 1065 is MLXV. You have written the numerals for 1066.

Tim Poninski, however, M with a line above it is 1000 x 1000 = 1,000,000

Mathen Rajeev Mathew, M without the bar is 1000. M with the bar is 1,000,000.

Jaime Reynardus, not with the bars over the letters. M with a bar = 1,000,000. Read the info again. 1065 is actually MLXVI

I didn't understand what the lines above meant! MLVX without the lines makes no sense.

james parrillo, I reconsidered. The X follows the V to be ten. V follows the L to be fifty five. So, I suppose a letter could apply to the letter before or after it? Thank you, Christine, James' wife

Wilma Tomlinson Mcphail, The X would follow the V when the V is meant to be subtracted from the X. 1900 would be CMM, 2000 minus 100. Thank you, Christine, James' wife

Ray Anderson, I might have guessed 1,055, but that was not an option. I had never heard of the lines above either but did choose correctly. Thank you, Christine, James' wife

Oh well. At least I learned something. I was never taught about the line above the numeral multiplying by 1.000. We never really covered Roman numbers that much. I just thought I was doing well to be able to figure out the year. :)
