What organ does a mosquito use to locate its targets?
One of the key ways mosquitoes locate their targets is by smelling the carbon dioxide emitted in their breath—they use an organ called a maxillary palp to do this. You know that we breathe out large amounts of gas all the time, but you possibly haven't heard that in this way we attract mosquitoes. It is an interesting fact that children get bit by these insects less often than adults. Perhaps the reason is that they exhale fewer amounts of gas than grown-ups.
Mosquitoes use not only exhaled carbon dioxide but also body odors and temperature, and movement to hone in on their victims. By the way, only female mosquitoes have the mouth parts necessary for sucking blood.
