George Washington, while supporting many of the ideas of the Federalists, never officially joined their party or any other. Unanimously elected president both terms by the electoral college, he worked to unify rival factions within and without the government. He was one of the founding fathers and to this day is thought of as the "father of the country," instituting many precedents still in use.

At his funeral he was eulogized by representative Henry Lee lll of Virginia who called him "first in war, first in peace, first in the hearts of his countrymen". In polls he is consistently ranked in the top three of the best presidents in American history.
