What sport did Gică Popescu play?
Gheorghe Popescu, widely known as Gică Popescu, was born on October 9, 1967, in Calafat, Romania. He is a former Romanian footballer who has made significant contributions to the sport both on and off the field. Currently, he serves as the president of the football club Farul Constanta.
During his illustrious career, Popescu represented Romania in three FIFA World Cup tournaments (1990, 1994, and 1998) and two UEFA European Championships (1996 and 2000). He played for several prestigious clubs, including CS Universitatea Craiova, Dinamo București, Steaua București, PSV Eindhoven, Tottenham Hotspur, FC Barcelona, U.S. Lecce, Galatasaray S.K., and SV Hannover 96. His time at Galatasaray was particularly notable as he helped the team win the UEFA Cup in 2000.
Popescu also had the honor of captaining FC Barcelona, leading them to victory in the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. After retiring from professional football, he ventured into business and established his own football academy, the Gică Popescu Football School, in Craiova. Despite his close association with the Becali brothers, his career took a different turn following their legal troubles.
In 2005, Popescu ran for the presidency of the Romanian Football Federation but was defeated by Mircea Sandu. In recognition of his achievements, he was awarded the Order of "Meritul Sportiv" Class III in March 2008 for his contributions to Romanian football during the 1990-2000 period.
