Well, everybody knows that the state took its name after the similarly named river. The word "Ohio" is translated from the Iroquois language as "the big river". By the way, if one wants to visit some cultural heritage sites left after Native American tribes, welcome to Ohio! The state is also famous for its advantageous geographical location.
Interestingly, Ohio's flag is unique in its non-rectangular shape.
17 stars translate to 17th state to enter the union!

Actually, it's not a flag; it's a pennant. I'm Carol from Greenville, OH in Darke County, just 2 counties northwest of Dayton. We learned all the basic Ohio facts in 4th grade Social Studies. State tree is the buckeye, of course - state flower is the red carnation & state bird is the cardinal. We are proud of our heritage which includes the first ever peace treaty to be signed with American Indians which is why Greenville is called "The TREATY CITY." Darke Co. boasts several historic natives like Phoebe Ann Moses; you would know her better for her professional name - Annie Oakley, who Sitting Bull fondly called "Little Sure Shot." Regardless of what some may say, she is my distant cousin. One of my mom's aunts used to visit w/ her at my Great-Great Grampa Metzcar's farm west of Greenville near Palestine. Annie's mother was my great-grampa's (Samuel Metzcar's) first cousin, according to my great-aunt.
Another famous native was Lowell Thomas, world traveling news correspondent. The house he was born in was moved to the Garst Museum grounds in Greenville. Also, Captain Zackary Landsdowne. of the ill-fated Shenandoah dirigible, which crashed in northern Ohio, was raised in Greenville.
Come visit us anytime and you could even tour the only factory in the world where all Kitchen Aide mixers are made! Bye! 8^D
