What state is nicknamed 'The Garden State'?
New Jersey is the fourth-smallest state in the US, but the most densely populated.
It was called the The Garden State because it was compared to an immense barrel, filled with good things to eat and open at both ends, with Pennsylvanians grabbing from one end and the New Yorkers from the other.
What are your thoughts on this subject?

That was easy - I live here. Where are the gardens again?
4th smallest state with the highest taxes in the USA. Should rename it to the Garnishment State.

The only reason I knew this was because of the movie "Miss Congeniality " Victor Melling:
Why is New Jersey called "The Garden State"?
Gracie Hart:
Because "Oil and Petrochemical Refinery State" wouldn't fit on a license plate?

Carlos Cruz, I was raised in NJ and it has LOTS and lots of farms. I really miss all the truck farm produce, the roadside produce stands... Nothing like Jersey corn, Jersey tomatoes, and Jersey peaches. If you ever visit, get out of the metropolitan areas and you'll probably see lots of gardening going on!

When they made the nickname, before the turnpike, parkway, and gw bridge, NJ had thousands of small farms and roadside produce markets throughout the state.

I lived there and agree with Joe Padovano on the taxes (even though NJ has the casinos) and the outrageous cost for car insurance and homes.

I was born and raised in Jersey and couldn't wait to get out. Finally did at 37 years old. I now own 20 acres in Pa. and actually enjoy life.

It's called the Garden State because of the number of farms and agriculture. It's not all highways and refineries, that's only one small portion of the state. Stop denigrating the state!
