What surname is shared by two Canadian Prime Ministers who served in this role fifty years apart?
Joseph Philippe Pierre Yves Elliott (Pierre) Trudeau, also referred to by his initials PET, was a Canadian lawyer and politician who served as the 15th prime minister of Canada from 1968 to 1979 and from 1980 to 1984. His outgoing personality and charismatic nature caused a media sensation which quickly became known as "Trudeaumania." In most all of his public appearances, he displayed a red rose on the left lapel of his suit jacket.
PET was born October 18, 1919 in Montreal, Quebec and joined the Liberal Party of Canada in 1965. Prior to winning the Liberal leadership race and becoming Prime Minister in 1968, he served as Canada's Attorney General and Minister of Justice. He suppressed the 1970 Quebec Terrorist Crisis by invoking the controversial War Measures Act. He pioneered official bilingualism and multiculturalism in Canada, fostering pan-Canadian identity.
After dating actress Barbra Streisand in 1969 and 1970, he quietly married 22-year old Margaret Sinclair in 1971. The couple had three sons together, the youngest of whom sadly was killed in an avalanche in British Columbia in 1998 at the age of 23. Pierre Trudeau passed away on September 28, 2000 at the age of 80.
His eldest son, Justin Trudeau, became the 23rd and current prime minister of Canada following the 2015 Canadian federal election; he is the first prime minister of Canada to be a descendant of a former prime minister.
