All planets have two types of motion, known as orbit and spin. Planets in our solar system all orbit the Sun. Every 23 hours, 56 minutes, and 4.1 seconds, the Earth spins once around its axis. We usually call this a "day" and just round it out to 24 hours. However, Earth is not the only thing spinning as it careens through space. Almost every celestial object like stars and planets are spinning. What's more interesting, almost everything within the solar system spins and orbits in the same direction.

In our solar system, the giant gas planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune) spin more rapidly on their axes than the inner planets do. The planets all orbit around the sun in the same direction and in virtually the same plane with the exceptions of Venus and Uranus. These differences are believed to stem from collisions that occurred late in the planets' formation.
