What type of dog is this?
Affenpoos are cute small dogs, especially loved by their female owners. The breed is the mix from the tiny Affenpinscher and the Toy Poodle, which give the dog its tiny size and beautiful haircut. A usual affenpoo weights around 8 pounds, being about 9-11 inches tall. These dogs are ideal for city dwellers, as they cause no troubles in small apartments. It is quite easy to keep the representatives of the breed healthy and satisfied within small spaces. As with any dog they do, however, require exercise and adore taking daily walks. They are very intelligent and usually possess the desire to please their owners, which makes them very easily trained.

As cute as it is, the correct word is "mutt", since it is a mixed breed. It is not a recognized breed because the appearance and characteristics of the offspring cannot yet be guaranteed to be consistent.

This "designer breed" is still a mutt due to the inability to breed two of these dogs and create an entire litter that will fit one specific breed standard. While I got the answer "correct" I will say that it is still wrong due to the fact the correct answer is still mutt or mix breed

Affenpoo is not a recognized breed - just a mix of breeds.

Larry Freeman I agree that recognition by the AKC or the UKC is unnecessary to be considered an actual breed however, those groups are considered the authorities on certifying breeds. What is necessary is that the offspring must look like the parents, both of whom must also look the same. This must occur for many generations to ensure consistency of characteristics in appearance and temperment to be considered a breed.
Until you can guarantee uniformity in this "designer breed", it cannot be considered a breed at all. It is a mixed breed, often called a mutt or mongrel because the offspring may vary in appearance depending on how the dominant and recessive genes combine with each mating and even within the same litter.
According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary, a mutt is simply a dog of mixed breeds. The product of two separate breeds.

The word mutt may be used affectionately or derogatorily. The choice is yours.
The opinion of the owners of said darlings matters little, nor does their umbrage change the fact that their pets are mutts. In fact, the cute portmanteau names given to these "designer dogs" only serves to remind us of their mixed or, dare I say it, impure breeding.
Let's call it as it is. Schnoodles, Labradoodles, and the like are not pure bred, hence mutts. Whether anyone likes it or not does not alter the truth of the matter.

Not at all true or factual in the remark above. I come from a long family history of professional dog breeders. A "breed" as they said is not a breed of it has not been recognized by AKC or CKC. A "breed" must be in existence for a minimum of 100 years to be called a breed. The above mentioned dog is not a breed, it is in fact, a mutt. Some like to dress it up and call them "designer dogs" but what they are actually over paying from is a downright mutt.

This dog is adorable. When I was a kid I had a black/white dog called Lucky. My parents called her a mutt & me as well bc I am of mixed heritage-- Jewish, Italian, Greek & Rusdian so being a mutt is NOT a bad thing.

I don't have a dog, but if I did, I'd hate walking it and having to pick up its affenpoo.

William Laughlin, mutts are great animals. Because of their mixed breeds they tend to be healthier that pure bred dogs. I have had both pure breds and mutts during my life. The truth is, if you treat them well all dogs are wonderful. For people reading, please adopt. There are too many dogs and cats that are killed just because they have no home.

Mutt and mongrel are negative labels. Don't like the label and sound like they are not great dogs. I have had AKC dogs too but with all the dogs in shelters and in rescues, I say, adopt, don't buy!!

I have a Shih Tzu/Affenpincher mix who sort of looks like the dog in the picture. She is a rescue who survived Parvo because she was rescued by Second Chance Rescue the day before she was to be put down by ACC. I would never call her a mutt, she is a mixed breed who is totally sweet and smart, loving and gives the best snuggles.

Just like all mixed breeds, the "Affenpoo" is not a purebred dog and should not be regarded as one. I love to rescue mixes, but they are just that--mixes.

William Laughlin, I agree, but in the UK would be called a mongrel.
