One day Anne received a gift from her parents, which would become one of the greatest objects of the world's historical heritage. It was a diary. At first the girl found it a little bit odd to be writing in the diary. She couldn’t imagine that anyone would ever be interested in what she would write.

While she’s in hiding during World War II, Anne decides to think of her diary as a friend, whom she names Kitty. It makes her writing easier. Besides, she doesn’t really have a real friend, "and that’s how the whole idea of keeping a diary started", she admits. "All I think about when I‘m with friends is having a good time. I can’t bring myself to talk about anything but ordinary everyday things. We don’t seem to be able to get any closer, and that’s the problem. Maybe it’s my fault that we don’t confide in each other. In any case, that’s just how things are, and unfortunately they’re not liable to change. This is why I’ve started the diary." Her diary, Kitty, chronicles Anne's life from June 12,1942 until August 1,1944. Anne's diary became one of the greatest bestsellers of all time and was translated into tens of different languages.

Anne Frank managed to believe that humanity was basically good despite the incontrovertible evidence to the contrary of the people around her and the sordid events that unfolded throughout Europe. Frank was a young girl who exhibited a pure and giving heart expressed in every word of her diary and, in the end, she proved her superiority over all those who claimed to be the master race, then and now. History is kind to all those dear in heart who exhibit strength, dignity, compassion, courage, grace and fortitude, as she did, during one of humanity's darkest hours.

I've been to the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam and also to Bergen - Belsen Death Camp when I was in the British Army. The latter is a more than sobering and horrifying experience and it's hard to describe the horrors that happened there. It wasn't technically an extermination camp like Auschwitz but that's merely a technicality as the end result was the same. A very brave and remarkable young lady.

In NZ, I had three friends, now all deceased, two of whom were incarcerated by the Nazis., possibly in Auschwitz One, a violinist, joined the NZ Symphony Orchestra when it was founded in 1948. The second was a Polish gentleman, who came here a boy with other child Polish refugees The third was a French lady who was with the French Resistance, who helped free people like my other two friends.

When I was 13 years old and confined to bed because of strep throat, my mother asked my brother to go to the used book store and buy something for me to read. He brought this book home to me. He said he thought I would like reading it was written by a young girl close to my own age. I read it and was deeply touched. Just a short time later, the movie starring Millie Perkins was shown on television. I watched it and became even more touched by the story. It deeply affected me as a teenager. I have encouraged other teenaged girls to read it ever since.
