What was John Lennon's middle name before it was changed to Ono?

John Lennon formally changed his middle name by deed poll from Winston to Ono, during a brief ceremony held on the roof of the Apple building at 3 Savile Row, London. The ceremony was carried out before Bueno de Mesquita, Commissioner of Oaths. Lennon had never liked his middle name, which had been given to him to serve as a wartime act of patriotism.

Technically, Lennon was unable to lose the Winston from his name, as UK law dictates that a person is unable to fully revoke a name given at birth.

Peter de Loriol, not true. There is no law on the books that state this. Most actors don't legally change their names, they just register their stage names with the actors guild and think that is good enough. I have two close friends that changed their names totally.

As manager of a very private London hotel, I met quite a few US actors and media stars whose passports I held during their stay and the names on the passports were quite different from the ones they were known by; Peter Graves and his brother were two, as was Donald Sutherland and several other personalities who need to remain nameless at the moment.
