What was the birthplace of Michelangelo?

Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni, simply known as Michelangelo, was born on 6 March 1475, in the village and commune of Caprese Michelangelo - near Arrezzo and about 50 miles (80 km) from Florence, in the republic of Florence, Italy (modern-day Tuscany).

Several months after Michelangelo's birth, the family moved to Florence, where he was raised.

During his mother's illness, and after her death in 1481 (when he was six years old), Michelangelo lived with a nanny and her husband, a stonecutter, in the town of Settignano, on a marble quarry and a small farm. There he gained his love for marble.

Like so many of the Renaissance masters, he became an adept (skillful) of multiple disciplines; he was a sculptor, painter, architect and poet. Given the sheer volume of surviving correspondence, sketches, and reminiscences, Michelangelo is the best-documented artist of the 16th century and he is described as the most accomplished artist of his era.

Michelangelo is often classified as the archetypal "Renaissance Man". He sculpted two of the artistic treasures of the world, David and the Pieta, before the age of 30. He painted the Sistine chapel in Rome, and at the age of 74, became the replacement architect of St. Peter's Cathedral.

At the age of 88, on 18 February 1564, Michelangelo died in Rome, Italy.
