Joséphine de Beauharnais was the first wife of Napoléon I, which made her the first Empress of the French.
Actually, her marriage to Napoleon I wasn't her first; she was married to Alexandre de Beauharnais, who was guillotined during the Reign of Terror, and she herself was imprisoned in the Carmes prison until five days after Alexandre's execution. Joséphine had affairs with several French politicians, later becoming Napoléon's mistress. They got married about a year after their first meeting.

Got the correct answer from the choices offered however her name was "Marie Josèphe Rose Tascher de la Pagerie" so 'Marie' was actually her first name. Napoleon was the one who called her Josephine (Josèphe) where she normally went by Rose or Marie. Love the trivia behind history.

A more valid alternate choice, IMO, would be Désirée, who was Napoléon's 2nd wife. But maybe the writer decided that having them all start with J might be more challenging.

Perhaps the old boy married her to at least seem to be in the good graces of the Church. I wonder, did Josephine get an annulment of her previous marriage? Since conservative elements were in power, an apparent reaction to the savagery of the Revolution and the fact that, I believe, church properties may have been confiscated, it might have been fairly easy to get.
