Some lawsuits seeking legal recognition of same-sex relationships appeared in the country in the late 20th century, but it took a lot of time to finally change the state of things. The first law legalizing same sex marriage was passed in 2003 in Massachusetts, which made this U.S. state the 6th jurisdiction on the planet to legalize gay marriages. The happy same sex couples of Massachusetts were the only homosexual Americans allowed to marry for another 5 years, as Connecticut made such marriages legal only in 2008. Other states were slowly joining this group, until same sex marriage became legal nationwide on the 26th of June, 2015.
