What was the Gunpowder Plot?

In 1605 the Gunpowder Plot was a failed assassination attempt to kill King James I of England. Thirteen young men planned to blow up the Houses of Parliament. Among them was Guy Fawkes, Great Britain's most notorious traitor. With their actions, they would kill the King James I, maybe even the Prince of Wales, and the Members of Parliament who were making life difficult for the Catholics in England.

James I of England was actually king of Scotland too. He is known as James the First (of England) and Sixth (of Scotland). His mother is Mary, Queen of Scots. James became King of England as Queen Elizabeth I had no heirs. James was already King of Scotland and was made king of England as he was the great-grandson of Henry VIII’s sister,Margaret Tudor, wife of James IV of Scotland.

Guy was the fall guy (sorry about the pun, haha) who simply got caught, under the Houses of Parliament, among the barrels of gunpowder. If you watched Game Of Thrones then you may be interested to know that Kit Harrington (Jon Snow) is a direct descendant of Robert Catesby, on his mum's side...and the actor's full name is Christopher Catesby Harrington.
