Three of Hollywood's very well known top stars, Paul Newman, Sidney Poitier, and Barbra Streisand, signed legal documents in 1969 to form their own movie production company. The First Artists Production Company, LTD (operated from 1969—1980), was created to finance the production and distribution of movies, starring Newman, Poitier, and Streisand.

This company was owned and operated by the three great film stars. They had the company seek out others for key administrative, operational, and production jobs. It also offered other artists and filmmakers unprecedented chances to make films.

Each of the principal artists (stars) made an initial commitment to produce and star in three movies.
