The name of the futuristic nuclear submarine commanded by Admiral Harriman Nelson (Richard Basehart) on the 1964 - 1968 U.S. TV series "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" was S.S.R.N. Seaview. It was a fictional nuclear submarine that was privately owned and operated to do good for all of humanity. Adventures took place where the crew and the Seaview had to combat foreign agents, forgotten Nazis, aliens, ghosts, werewolves, fantastic sea creatures, etc.

In the TV series, the submarine was introduced the audience as a civilian nuclear powered ballistic missile submarine. The members of her crew, including the designer and builder of the submarine Admiral Nelson, and Commander Lee Crane (David Hedison), the Seaview's captain, are based at the Nelson Institute of Marine Research in Santa Barbara, CA. The giant vessel was often moored at the research facility location some 500 feet beneath the building in a secret underground submarine pen carved out of solid rock.

The Seaview was officially for undersea marine research; it visited many exotic locations in the Seven Seas. Its secret mission was to defend the entire planet from any type of world and extraterrestrial threat. Clever efforts were often made in 110 TV episodes to have the submarine and crew work very hard to fulfill its critical, risky, and mostly life-or-death overall mission.
