What was the name of the successor to Windows XP and the predecessor to Windows 7?
The Windows Vista operating system (in Romance languages meaning "view, outlook," originally from the Latin *videre*, "to see") was released by Microsoft on January 30, 2007, and is the successor to Windows XP and the predecessor to Windows 7.
Support was discontinued by Microsoft on April 11, 2017.
Windows Vista was developed as the successor to Windows XP, version NT 6.0. It was the first Microsoft operating system produced entirely according to Microsoft's Security Development Lifecycle. Windows Longhorn (the internal working name for Windows Vista) was first announced by Microsoft in the summer of 2001, even before the release of Windows XP. At that time, it was intended as an interim step between XP and the next version (then called Blackcomb) and was originally slated for release by the end of 2003. However, this was repeatedly delayed, so that development work on the enterprise version was completed on November 8, 2006, while development of the consumer version continued for several more weeks. Windows Vista became available in November 2006 for businesses and developers, and on January 30, 2007 for private customers.
