'I Will Always Love You' is a song originally recorded by Dolly Parton (born 1946) in 1973. Whitney Houston (1963-2012) recorded a new arrangement of the song for the soundtrack to the 1992 film 'The Bodyguard'.

In the UK, Houston's version was ranked the number-one single of December 1992, coincidentally making it the Christmas number one. The single sold over 1,550,000 copies, becoming the tenth best-selling single of the 1990s in the UK. Following Houston's death, the song reappeared in the UK Charts in 10th position.

Dolly Parton originally wrote the song for her partner and mentor Porter Wagoner, from whom she was separating professionally after seven years. In 'The Bodyguard', it was sung by Rachel, played by Houston, after saying goodbye to Frank (Kevin Costner), knowing their relationship would never work out.

Several other artists have released versions of 'I Will Always Love You', including LeAnn Rimes, Linda Ronstadt and Sarah Washington. Yet, no one achieved the same accolades as Houston, whose rendition became the best-selling physical single by a female in music history, with sales of over 20 million copies worldwide. It was also released on 'The Bodyguard' soundtrack album, which as of 2021, remains the best-selling soundtrack album of all time, with global sales of over 45 million copies.
